Calgary creates new ice trail and introduces ice bikes

Bowness Park is getting a winter refresh, with a new ice trail and ten ice bikes for Calgary families to try out through the colder months.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A new recreational option is available to Calgarians at a northwest park.

The city is creating a new 1.6-kilometre ice trail in Bowness Park and will open it to the public before 2020 ends.

Calgary will also become the first city in Canada to offer ice bikes, which are already available for rent on Bowness Park Lagoon.

These bikes offer an alternative to skating and are essentially a regular bike with a sled mounted on the front in place of a wheel.

Adult and child-sized bikes are available for rent at a cost of $12/half-hour or $20/hour.

Those under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet.

Public health orders must be followed when using the bikes.
