‘Beware of fake jewelry scam,’ says RCMP

AIRDRIE (660 NEWS) – RCMP in Airdrie are putting out a warning of a new scam going around.

Mounties say if someone is trying to sell you gold in the parking lot of a gas station, then it’s probably not legit.

Two incidents took place this month, where people were scammed out of their money.

The first instance took place on Dec. 1. where two men asked for money for gas to get to B.C and told the victims they would pay them double when they got home. The victims were then given what they thought was 18 karat gold in return, and it turns out the gold was fake.

The second case took place on Tuesday where three people were approached by again, two men, this time in the parking lot of a Scotiabank and London Drugs in Airdrie.

The victims paid $450.00 for the fake gold.

The two men police believe are responsible for the scams are said to both be in their 40s. The first man is about 5’5, heavyset with short hair. He was wearing dark jeans and fancy brown shoes. The second man is about 5’6 tall with a slim build. He has a beard and greying black hair. He was wearing glasses, a bright blue jacket and is a smoker.

Police say do not purchase gold or give money to the men, and if you are approached or see them, please call Airdrie RCMP.
