Could Calgary see a white Christmas this year?

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Christmas is now just 10 days away and if you’re hoping for those perfect conditions like we see in Hallmark movies, you may be disappointed.

According to 660 NEWS meteorologist Michael Kuss, a white Christmas may not be in store for Calgary.

“The probability of a white Christmas in Calgary is about 60 per cent traditionally but I’m putting it a little lower than that this year. We only really have two opportunities for snow right now in the forecast from now until Christmas. One comes on Dec. 22 and the other possibility is Christmas day itself,” he explained.

“The potential is there for that perfect Christmas scenario.”

Kuss said his definition of a white Christmas is when there are at least two centimetres of snow on the ground, with more falling throughout the day.

The 14-day forecast for Calgary sees temperatures around the seasonal mark and Christmas day looking at a high of just minus one.

According to CityNews meteorologist Adam Stiles, white Christmases have become less and less frequent over the last 30 years.

“Three-quarters of the larger Canadian cities are showing a change of frequency of white Christmases ranging from five per cent to 45 per cent of it happening less often.”

Most cities over the past 30 years have seen a drop off in the number of snow-covered Christmas mornings.

Only eight out of 45 cities that Environment Canada released statistics for have no change in frequency for the 30 years versus the 30 previous.
