The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has released more details about what happened before a car hit and killed a man and a woman crossing the street at 17th Avenue and 85th Street S.W.
ASIRT says Calgary police got the first call about a speeding Acura at 6:54 p.m. Saturday around 13th Street and 17th Avenue S.W. and about four minutes later had stopped the vehicle around 69th Street, but before police could even speak with the driver, he sped away.
ASIRT says police did not follow the car for about two minutes and then arrived at the crash scene, where a 40-year-old man and 36-year-old woman were pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver, a 52-year-old man, was taken to hospital, where he is still in critical condition.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will investigate police actions, while Calgary police will investigate the driver’s actions.
