Community organization asks for help as COVID-19 threatens their future

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A community organization in Inglewood is asking for Calgarians to help as the pandemic has prevented them from being able to help seniors.

The Inglewood Silver Threads Association operates out of a small, old building on 9 Avenue and usually, they hold events to allow seniors to socialize throughout the week.

Lorraine volunteers with the organization and says everything they usually do to support these activities have been called off.

“All the bake sales, all the little initiatives we had, they’ve been cancelled,” she said.

“Fundraising is how we stay alive and, after 47 years, the doors are going to close unless we can get at least $27,000 this year, so we started a GoFundMe page to try and get donations to help us out.”

She says what they offer to seniors is especially important during these times.

“It’s better for their wellbeing to get out of the house and be with their peers and mingle. And they take care of one another. If there is a health issue and someone notices, they’ll call a doctor.”

“They’re very proactive towards each other.”

She hopes that government grants will help in the long run, but right now they need donations from the people.
