Calgary to receive over $152M in infrastructure funding

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Improvements for everything from roads to the Jack Singer Concert Hall are on the way thanks to new funding from the province.

The City of Calgary says more than $152 million is coming from the province’s $500-million municipal stimulus program first announced in July.

“We’ve got a long list of infrastructure needs in the City of Calgary,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said. “This investment is going to let us get to work on some of the most pressing ones, including the repairs and upgrades our affordable housing stock requires. Strategic investments like this allow us to build a city that serves all of its people.”

The money will also fund improvements to the Calgary Zoo, Heritage Park, the Telus Spark Science Centre and Fort Calgary.

The Glenbow Museum and numerous parks will see upgrades including the construction of a dome at Shouldice Athletic Park.

“The most compassionate thing we can do right now is create jobs for Albertans. The MSP program provides vital infrastructure dollars to our municipal partners, so they can invest in Alberta’s economic recovery,” Alberta Municipal Affairs minister Tracy Allard said.

Funding will also go to transit lanes, queue jumps and traffic signal upgrades along 52 St. SE.

Nenshi said the projects they chose are all shovel-ready.
