Man surrenders after locking himself in apartment building in Forest Lawn

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – One man surrendered to police after an eventful night in Forest Lawn.
Police said a man was badly beaten outside a pub and the suspect, who was known to be carrying a gun, ran from officers and barricaded himself inside an apartment building on 17 Ave. near 42 St.
The man eventually surrendered to police, but an hour later smoke started billowing out from the apartment.
Firefighters are still here. They say one person — who suffered from smoke inhalation — was rescued from the inferno last night. The entire strip of stores and residential units had to be evacuated. Calgary firefighters rescued one person from the upper floor suffering from minor smoke inhalation and the entire building had to be evacuated, affecting about 15 people.
Damage from the fire was limited to just one apartment but is said to be extensive.
Other units also suffered smoke and water damage.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
