CBE says students can no longer transition to at-home learning

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Despite students in grades 7 through to 12 having to go online between now and Jan. 11, The Calgary Board of Education said it won’t be letting students make that change permanent in the new year.

Last month, the province mandated these students move to online learning starting Nov. 30 as part of a series to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

The CBE asked families to make a decision in August on whether they want to have their kid in online or in-person classes.

However, parents won’t be able to let students switch from in-person classes to online classes in the new year, that’s according to the board’s chief superintendent who said it’s to minimize disruption that may come up when moving staff around.

But they will let students who have chosen to go online switch back to in-person classes if they want to, just not the other way around.

Those students have to let the board know by Jan. 8.

In August, the CBE reported over 21,000 students enrolled in online learning, accounting for about 16 per cent of the student population.
