Argentina soccer legend Diego Maradona dies at 60

Football legend Diego Maradona has died, multiple outlets report.

The retired midfielder was considered one of the greatest players of his time when he led Argentina to the World Cup in 1986 as captain. He died of a heart attack at his home, according to the BBC.

The Argentine Football Association confirmed news of Maradona’s passing on Twitter Wednesday.

Maradona had recently undergone an operation for bleeding in his skull. The procedure to address his subdural hematoma, which is an accumulation of blood between a membrane and his brain, had been done on Nov. 3.

He was released from a Buenos Aires hospital and had been recovering in a private home near his older daughters.

Maradona fell ill while coaching Argentine first-division Gimnasia y Esgrima on Oct. 30, leaving the team’s game before the end of the first half.

One of the sport’s all-time greats, Maradona publicly struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, and was hospitalized in 2000 and in 2004 for heart problems attributed to cocaine use.

He was 60 years old.
