CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Albertans online are wondering why Premier Jason Kenney has not made a media appearance in more than a week.

The hashtag #WhereIsKenney topped the Twitter trends at various times throughout the day Sunday.

The premier’s last public appearance was nine days ago – Nov. 13 – when new COVID-19 restrictions were announced.

Kenney was noticeably absent from Dr. Deena Hinshaw’s health update on Friday.

In a statement, the premier’s office said the absence was a health precaution.

“As you are aware, the premier is in his mandatory self-isolation, due to a close contact testing positive for COVID-19. During this time, he is working from home, constantly being updated on the evolving situation by Alberta public health officials.

“We will continue to communicate regularly with Albertans on the COVID-19 situation, as we have been since the pandemic began.”

Lori Williams, a political science professor at Mount Royal University, says Kenney may be strategizing how to approach the recent surge in COVID cases in Alberta during his absence.

“It certainly gets people curious about what’s going on with the premier,” said Williams. “Particularly since there have been things going on in the province that you would expect the premier to weigh in on.”

Several reports suggest Kenney will hold a media briefing sometime on Monday.
