Police arrest leader of major drug trafficking group, offer support to victims

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary Police says it has arrested and charged the leader of a massive drug trafficking organization in the city.

The 52-year-old man is said to be the head of a group known as ‘The Family.’ Police believe the group is responsible for 80 violent crimes in Calgary over the past 18 months.

Over the last year, the District 1 General Investigations Unit (GIU) identified more than 500 people believed to be involved or connected to The Family’s drug distribution network as either sellers or buyers.

On Wednesday, police searched four homes on 8 Ave. NE, 26 Ave. SW and Sylvan Close SE, along with two vehicles. Investigators seized several illegal drugs including meth, crack cocaine and GHB along with nearly $35,000 in cash and weapons.

“This operation sought to address the ongoing drug-related crime and violence throughout the downtown core and we believe we have been able to make a significant impact in addressing these issues,” said Sgt. Jodi Gach.

Police also sent teams of officers and community partners into downtown Calgary to find alleged associates of The Family. Officers arrested 11 people believed connected to the distribution of the drugs with outstanding warrants.

As well, Police partnered with the Bear Clan Patrol to offer support and resources to more than 100 vulnerable persons in the downtown, offering support for those impacted by the works of ‘The Family’.

“Although the amount of drugs seized does not appear record-breaking, we believe a large volume of drugs were distributed in small quantities across this vast network, never staying in one place for long,” said Gach.

“It was equally important that we worked with our community partners to ensure vulnerable people connected to this organization had support and access to services.”

Other organizations, including The Elbow River Healing Lodge, the Friendship Centre, the SORCe and Be The Change YYC will be offering immediate resources and support in the days to come.
