Canadian soldier killed in live-fire training accident in eastern Alberta

A Canadian soldier was killed in a training accident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in eastern Alberta.

In a release, the military said the soldier sustained a gunshot wound during a live-fire training exercise on Friday night around 10 p.m.

The Canadian Armed Forces did not disclose the soldier’s identity while they confirm the wishes of the deceased’s family.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our fallen soldier,” read the Canadian Army release. “The Canadian Armed Forces will be there to support the family during this difficult time.”

The individual was treated at the scene of the incident before being moved to a hospital in Wainwright, Alta. The soldier was then transported by air to a hospital in Edmonton, where they died Saturday morning.

The Army said the training has been suspended and an investigation is underway.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted his condolences on Saturday afternoon.

“Our hearts go out to their loved ones and Canadian Forces colleagues,” he wrote. “Know that we are mourning with you and are here to support you during this difficult time.”

Wainwright is roughly 205 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
