‘Easier time to clean streets in October,’ says city roads department

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – October is an easier month to clean city streets according to the City of Calgary roads department.

This is because there is not any build of snow and ice since it is the “early season” according to Tara Norton-Merrin with the roads department.

She says they currently have about 60 to 70 sanders on the roads.

“They are mainly on the priority one routes which are the main roads that have 20,000 or more vehicles per day on them. They are laying down pickle which is salt and gravel, and the salt helps the gravel stick to the roads, and it helps with traction as well.

“We are getting a lot of snow and it is very cold, but we didn’t already have a lot of snow packed up on those roads ahead of time. So, that means we have lots of room to push it to the side on the priority two roads which means we won’t have to call snow or parking bans.”

Normally on Oct. 5 of each year, sanders switch to winter operations so sudden snowfalls do not catch them off guard.
