New highway interchange coming for Airdrie

AIRDRIE (660 NEWS) – The Alberta government is investing over $20 million for a much-needed road project in Airdrie.

Premier Jason Kenney and Transportation Minister Ric McIver announced the construction of an interchange from Highway 40 in Airdrie to the QEII.

“Airdrie is one of Alberta’s fastest-growing communities,” said Kenney.

“Alberta’s government will continue to grow Airdrie’s economy along the QEII–one of Alberta’s busiest roads and a critical trade corridor. Building this interchange now will create over 300 jobs and make life easier for all Albertans who drive the QEII.”

The provincial government is committing $21.1 million to the project with the City of Airdrie already raising over $60 million for the interchange.

“As a lifelong Airdrie resident, I’ve seen this city grow and its economy transform,” said Airdrie-East MLA Angela Pitt.

“However, congestion along and access to the QEII is a constant frustration for drivers, particularly during rush hours. Airdrie residents and businesses will greatly benefit from better access to their communities and businesses.”

About 85,000 vehicles travel along the QEII near 40 Ave. in Airdrie every day and that number has increased by 30 per cent since 2014.

Preliminary work on the project is already way with construction expected to start in the next year and will include a bridge over 40 Ave. and ramps to connect the road to the QEII.

Construction is slated to finish by 2024.
