Sixth death reported at Foothills hospital as outbreak grows to seven units

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A sixth patient at the Foothills Medical Centre has died and a seventh unit has been upgraded to an outbreak.

The unit was changed to watch status after a positive patient case was found. There is now one unit that remains under watch.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) says there are 36 COVID-19 cases in patients and 31 in healthcare workers.

Two new visitors have tested positive for the virus bringing that total to five.

“The hospital remains a safe place to receive care and AHS is doing all it can to reduce the risk of transmission,” AHS said in a release.

“The safety of patients, healthcare workers, physicians and visitors is our top priority.”

AHS has yet to find the source of infection or how it was transmitted.

“Multiple teams are working daily to determine where the infection may have started, how it was transmitted and who needs to be contacted and tested to limit exposure,” AHS said.

All patients who may have been linked to the outbreaks have been identified and tested.

The hospital has conducted more than 1,500 COVID-19 tests.
