No COVID or WEXIT: Alberta releases list of rejected vanity license plates

Some Canadians are getting creative with their vanity license plates… a bit too clever, according to the plate police. Courtney Theriault explains why COVID19 and WEXIT were not allowed in Alberta.

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – There are plenty of words and phrases allowed on a custom license plate, but sometimes it’s more interesting to see what’s been rejected.

Service Alberta has released a list of over 130 license plate suggestions that were turned down between Jan. 2019 and August of this year.

The vanity plates were rejected for several reasons including foul language, sexual references, political sensitivity and alcohol or cannabis references.

Some of the plates tossed out include QANON, COVID-19, CANABUS and OILRSUK.

According to the Alberta government website, custom plates must not feature any ethnic or religious slurs, sexual connotations or words that when translated are offensive.

You’re also not allowed to use text that may cause identification problems, such as MLA, Mayor or Doctor.

Service Alberta said it approves roughly 7,000 personalized plates each year.

In the past fiscal year, 11,019 plates were approved.
