RCMP shoots and kills man in Calling Lake, ASIRT investigates

CALLING LAKE (660 NEWS) – Alberta’s police watchdog is looking into a case where Mounties shot and killed a 51-year-old man in Calling Lake.

On Sept. 19 at around 11:15 a.m, Athabasca RCMP responded to numerous 911 calls where a man said he planned on having a gunfight with police.

When officers reached the location, they found a man waiting outside of a house.

After their arrival, the man entered the house while RCMP waited for backup and the Emergency Response Team (ERT).

While waiting, officers got ahold of the man on the phone, after which he exited the house with a gun and began to approach them.

A confrontation occurred where RCMP fired at hit the man, who was later pronounced dead.

A loaded rifle and a spent shell were recovered from the scene.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating the incident.

The RCMP will look into finding out the reason behind the man’s actions.
