Upgrades coming to Stoney Trail over the Bow River

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A major upgrade is on the way for a section of one of the city’s busiest highways.

Transportation Minister Ric McIver was in Calgary Friday, announcing a $70 million investment to replace the eastbound bridge on southeast Stoney Trail over the Bow River.

The upgrades are part of the province’s economic recovery plan which will see $10 billion go toward several infrastructure projects in Alberta.

“This strategic investment and the over 350 jobs it creates, deliver on our commitment to Alberta’s recovery and growth in the years ahead,” said McIver. “Replacing the eastbound South Bow River Bridge will make it safer and more efficient to move in and around south Calgary.”

This is another investment not only in Calgary’s infrastructure, but also in Calgarians.

This new bridge and the new pedestrian crossing over the Bow River will put people to work and improve our experience in Fish Creek Park.

The project will also include widening the westbound bridge and building a new, stand-alone pedestrian bridge.

“The construction of this new bridge is important for many reasons,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “It will create jobs at a time when they are most needed. It will improve safety outcomes and efficiency for those driving in this area, while also factoring in a better pedestrian and cyclist route. These investments in Calgary are always good news.”

Construction of the project is expected to start later this fall and will take roughly three years to complete.
