Calgary Housing Company tenants receive late payment notices

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Over 500 late payment notices have been sent out to tenants apart of the Calgary Housing Company (CHC).

The notices were issued in August, and the president of CHC, Sarah Woodgate, said half of the notices have already been dealt with.

“What we are seeing is we have seen an increase in late rent payments and overall rent arrears at Calgary Housing Company. Calgary Housing Company provides homes through a variety of housing options to 2,500 Calgarians,” she said.

‘’The late rent payments are 40 per cent higher than a typical year and our rent arrears are double a typical level. So, what we are seeing is the financial stress of households trying to pay for basic needs,” added Woodgate.

Woodgate said CHC has created a robust eviction prevention strategy are working with tenants to create an interest-free payment plan.

Tenants are also being provided with tools for financial assistance, so they can make their payments.

“What we are finding is people who live in our rental housing who are primarily on a working income are where the highest arrears are, so at this point we are seeing this wave of housing distress as we enter into the winter and we are concerned for families that are challenged to meet their basic needs.”
