46 schools reporting COVID-19 cases: advocacy group

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Nearly 50 schools are experiencing COVID-19 cases just three weeks into the new year.

That’s according to the virus tracker set up by the group Support our Students (SOS) Alberta which shows 46 Alberta schools are reporting at least one positive COVID-19 case.

About 21 of those schools are in Calgary and at least six are in Edmonton.

According to the tracker, six of the 46 schools have been designated as outbreaks meaning two or more cases have been confirmed within 14 days.

Auburn Bay School and Lester B. Pearson High School are the latest Calgary schools to join the outbreak list, following St. Wilford and Henry Wise Wood High School last week.

Chinook High School in Lethbridge and Leo Nickerson School in St. Albert are the other schools on the outbreak list.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) said it will reach out to students and staff who may have been exposed to the virus and let them know the next steps.

Contact tracing is being done to also figure out if the virus was contracted or spread in schools.

Last week, the education minister’s office said it’s unavoidable that cases would pop-up in schools as kids go back to class, adding, they’ll support school boards and adapt to the situation as it evolves.
