Nenshi continues to wait for Magliocca to publicly apologize for expenses

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Mayor Naheed Nenshi is unsure when Ward 2 councillor Joe Magliocca plans to publicly apologize after it was found he inappropriately expensed over $5,600.

A forensic audit found the thousands worth of improper claims over two years.

PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) conducted the audit and found Magliocca expensed $36,687 as of December 31, 2019.

Of this, $20,782 was determined to be eligible for reimbursement.

There are more than $9,000 in-flight upgrades that still need to be reviewed by the city’s finance committee which could also violate city policy.

The report resulted in the city council to impose sanctions against Magliocca, including a letter of reprimand, banning him from business trips until 2021, and a public apology.

Nenshi had hoped the councillor would have made the public apology before council resumed in the fall.

“I’ve written a letter, as requested by counsel, to councillor Magliocca, highlighting why council unanimously felt that his actions were beyond the pale, and reminding him that counsel has requested a public apology from him,” Nenshi said.

“To be honest, I have not heard one word from him since council passed that resolution -and so, I hope he’s just working on that letter.”

The city had also sent the investigation to the Calgary police who passed on the case to Alberta Mounties, saying it’s best for transparency.

Issues with Joe Magliocca’s expenses first came to light after the Calgary Herald reported the councillor had spent more than other members at a conference in Quebec City.
