Brentwood killer de Grood up for annual review, Calgary MP concerned

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The man who stabbed and killed five people during a house party in Brentwood will have his annual review next week.

Matthew de Grood was found not criminally responsible for the deaths of five people in 2014 due to a mental disorder.

Last year, he was granted the right to unsupervised outings from Alberta Hospital in Edmonton and travel within the province for up to a week, as long as the trip has been approved and he is with a responsible adult.

Calgary MP Stephanie Kusie said the families of the victims are worried De Grood will be given more freedoms after his review.

“At his previous review last year, he was already granted unsupervised outings in Edmonton by the Provincial Review Board despite them considering him a significant risk to the safety of the public.”

She added the review board needs to to make sure public safety is the primary concern when determining the release of violent offenders.

Kusie said the federal Conservative party plans to put forward a motion in the House of Commons to study the provincial review boards. That motion has been delayed because of the pause of Parliament.

De Grood’s annual review is scheduled for Sept. 8.
