Century Gardens Park getting much needed makeover

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The city is hoping a park in downtown Calgary will attract more families and less crime when it reopens to the public this fall.

Senior project manager Andrew King says the city was aware of the drug use and other problems in Century Gardens Park on 8 Avenue SW.

In response, the city worked with police to make it a better public space with more lighting.

“There’s going to be, obviously, security cameras scattered throughout the park. Also, (we’re) opening up the park’s design so there are fewer nooks and crannies.”

There will be a new splash pad, an amphitheatre, and public washrooms.

King hopes the whole area will benefit.

“It’s going to be a great improvement for that side of downtown. It’s going to be a brand-new park, totally updated to all our new building standards.”

Construction should be complete late September, with a reopening in early October.
