Calgary Northeast MLA steps up for summer storm victims

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Northeast Calgary residents hit by the massive hailstorm back in June are getting some reassurance from the province.

The UCP MLA for Calgary Northeast says about 99 per cent of homeowners have coverage, and many have been having all sorts of trouble getting their property fixed.

“The issues were that insurance companies were moving too slowly,” Sawhney said.

“The adjusters were not providing estimates that the homeowners felt were high enough. Adjusters were difficult to get a hold of, and they weren’t including all of the damage.”

Rajan Sawhney, who is also the Minister of Community and Social Services, the province’s superintendent of insurance, has issued a letter to all insurance companies.

In the letter, she directs them to comply with legislation and ensure claims are honoured and handled more quickly.

Although there are a few other issues the homeowners had in mind, Sawhney says that after talking to them and conducting a survey, insurance is at the forefront of the problems.

“Overwhelmingly, what I heard over and over again is that it was the insurance companies.”

Damage from the storm on June 13 is pegged at more than $1 billion.
