Frustrations surface as Calgary high school sports postponed

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Parents and students say they’re frustrated after learning the start of the high school sports season in Calgary will be postponed.

The Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) said it’s waiting until October to see whether or not back-to-school plans are going well and figure out if it’s safe to bring back fall sports.

Until then, all organized meetings, skill development sessions, tryouts, and practices are on hold.

The association said it spoke with the Alberta School’s Athletic Association (ASAA), Alberta Health Services (AHS), and Calgary’s public and Catholic school boards, coming to the decision that fall sports need to be postponed for the sake of health and safety.

That decision, however, is not sitting well with parents and student-athletes who argue if it’s safe enough to go back to school, it’s safe enough for fall sports.

Some parents even expressed their confusion online, asking why physical education classes can go ahead but not sports.

The CSHAA will revisit the decision Oct. 1 to decide whether to postpone fall sports longer or bring them back.
