Employees urged to get tested following outbreak at Lilydale plant

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Operators of the Lilydale chicken plant in Calgary say they’ve taken action after 15 workers tested positive for COVID-19.

In a release, Sofina Foods said all employees have been encouraged to be tested and safety protocols remain in place in the plant in Ramsay in the southeast.

The company said the infected employees always wore masks and maintained physical distancing while at work.

“All Sofina Foods sites have in place temperature checks, ongoing sanitization of common areas and offices, staggered breaks, physical distancing in common areas, mandatory face covering, Plexiglas separations on production lines, at handwashing stations and in lunchrooms,” the statement reads.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) believes the risk of spread is low and the plant remains operational.

It’s not the first time the coronavirus has affected employees at the plant.

In April, one employee tested positive for the virus but was the only reported case at the time.
