Alberta police watchdog called in to investigate Red Deer shooting

RED DEER (660 NEWS) – Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating what lead to an officer firing his gun at a suspect Monday morning in Red Deer.

RCMP said a Mountie opened fire on a car at around 2:30 a.m. in the area of 51 Avenue and 33 Street following a police chase the night before.

The suspect took off in the vehicle that was later found in the Eastview neighborhood at around 7:00 a.m.

Police said the suspect was found about four hours later and is now in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

ASIRT has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the actions of the officer.

RCMP will continue to investigate the vehicle and the events leading up to the shooting.
