Ostrich at Calgary Zoo dies at 28 years old

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It’s a sad day for the Calgary Zoo as Lucy the Ostrich has died.

The zoo made the announcement on Twitter, saying Lucy had to be euthanized Tuesday due to age-related arthritis in her legs.

Lucy was 28 years old, well surpassing the median life expectancy for southern ostriches, which is just over 10 years.

“Lucy’s gentle personality and curiosity will be fondly remembered by all who knew her,” zoo officials said on Twitter. “Lucy lived a very long and wonderful life with us, and she will be dearly missed by her human caregivers.”

The ostrich was born at the Toronto Zoo in 1992 and came to Calgary the following year.
