‘Our hearts are broken’: Family of missing woman speak out

CHESTERMERE (660 NEWS) – The family of a missing Chestermere woman is pleading for information leading to the recovery of her body.

Vida Smith, 69, travelled to Calgary from Chestermere to visit a friend on July 21 and didn’t return home.

Later that week she missed a doctor’s appointment, prompting her family to report her missing.

Kevin Barton, 60, was charged with manslaughter in connection with the disappearance of Smith.

“Vida Smith is more than just a missing person or a victim,” Smith’s family said. “She’s a beautiful human being, she’s a friend, a mother and a grandmother. She loved her grandchildren more than anything in this world. Vida is so missed and forever loved by her friends and family.”

The statement goes on to say they are “beyond devastated” knowing they will never see her again.

“Our mom deserves dignity and respect. We just want to find her and bring her home so she can Rest In Peace,” the family finishes.

“Though we have laid charges, our investigation is not over,” said Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the CPS Homicide Unit.

“We remain focused on locating Vida’s remains so we can help bring some sense of peace to her family”.

Investigators are also still looking to speak with anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in a parking lot on the west side of the Sunridge ATB, located at 2555 32 St. N.E., on Tuesday, July 21.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling the Calgary Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
