RED DEER – RCMP are still investigating a brutal attack in Red Deer that left a doctor dead.

Police said a suspect went to a doctor’s office at the Village Mall on 50 Ave. and attacked the doctor with some sort of weapon, Monday.

The doctor later died of his injuries.

A witness to the attack at the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic said the victim was her family doctor.

Anina Mullin said she was waiting in the lobby of the clinic with her 13-year-old daughter when they heard banging and then, cries of “Help Me! Help Me! Call 911!”

Premier Jason Kenney and Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro both tweeted that they were saddened to hear about the fatal attack.

“I’m deeply saddened to hear of this horrific incident,” said Shandro. “Sending my condolences to the physician’s family and loved ones.”

RCMP said one man is in custody and officers were not looking for other suspects.

No names have been released as the investigation is ongoing.

Police are expected to release more information at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, including details on the charges in the case.

Residents of Red Deer are also planning a vigil for this Friday.
