Man charged in Vida Smith’s death makes first court appearance

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A Calgary woman remains missing as the man charged in her death made his first court appearance.

Kevin Barton, 60, was charged with manslaughter earlier this week in connection with the disappearance of Vida Smith.

Smith went missing on July 21 after she travelled to Calgary from Chestermere to visit a friend and didn’t return home.

Police said according to a day planner belonging to Smith, she was scheduled to meet with Barton on July 21 around 12:30 p.m. at a coffee shop in northeast Calgary.

Barton’s lawyer has asked the case be adjourned for two weeks in order to get material from the prosecution.

He is scheduled back in court on August 19.
