Calgary police officer battles devastating illness

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A Calgary police officer has endured a horrific ordeal during the pandemic but he was not infected with COVID-19.

Constable Jason Bramham contracted H-1-N-9 influenza.

Five months after being stricken with the illness, he is still in the hospital.

The officer, who has worked with the Calgary Police Service for the past ten years, became severely ill in late February.

He was placed in a medically-induced coma and underwent multiple heart surgeries.  His family and friends didn’t know if he’d survive.

His friend, Constable Gavin Sather says Bramham, an avid hiker, paid a terrible price.

“His heart’s since recovered but, during that time, parts of his body were affected, his circulation was affected and it caused the necessity to amputate both of his lower legs,” said Sather.

Cst. Sather launched a fundraiser to help pay more than $50-thousand for prosthetics not covered by benefits.

“One of the things he wanted to say is that he’s so appreciated of the support he’s received from the community.”

Sather says his friend also wants people to know about the importance of getting a flu shot which he says doctors believe might have prevented his illness.
