Parks Canada preparing for busy long weekend

WATERTON (660 NEWS) – It’s expected to be a busy August long weekend for national parks in Alberta.

With many people trying to make the most of the sunny and warm forecast this weekend, Christy Gust-Avison, with Waterton Lakes National Park, advises travellers to be aware the park may feel congested.

“We have a solid traffic control plan in place and we do have people directing traffic throughout the park, so we would ask that visitors follow all of those directions. In certain areas of the park, there may be a short wait or we may ask you to move on and visit that area a different time.”

Gust-Avison encourages you to visit the park earlier in the day and have a backup plan in the event traffic volume gets too busy.

Officials at Lake Louise are also expecting a full house with wait times for parking to range between 60 and 90 minutes.

On top of waking up early to avoid long wait times, Gust-Avison reminds visitors to be respectful of the natural environment at all parks.

“We also ask, if you do have a picnic or have a snack, that any garbage ends up being packed up and placed in one of our bear-proof bins.”

Parks Canada said you need to adhere to social distancing rules if you’re visiting and wear a mask if you can’t stay two metres away from others.
