Sportsnet 960 The Fan bringing Flames action in ‘adaptive’ way

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — As the Calgary Flames hit the ice Tuesday in Edmonton versus the Oilers in exhibition action, the way the game is brought to you on the radio airwaves will be much different.

The new normal.

Typically perched in the media box, the duo of Derek Wills and Peter Loubardias will bring you the play-by-play and commentary from here in Calgary — in a boardroom in the very building we’re writing this story from.

“We’ve had to be adaptive,” Sportsnet 960 The Fan program director Kelly Kirch explained. “We’ll get a feed, not only audio but video, so our two broadcasters can do the games and see them in real-time and hear the noise from the arena.

“But they will be safe and sound, protected here at the studio in Calgary.”

Because the COVID-19 situation is so fluid, it’s important not to take any chances.

“The NHL said radio, anything that isn’t national, would be done from here,” he said. “They are limited to the number of people they can have there [in Edmonton’s bubble].

“I think we’re going to do a really good job of it. I think probably the majority of listeners if we didn’t tell them this was happening, wouldn’t notice.”

And fans need not worry, the format of Flames broadcasts on 960 isn’t changing from what they are used to.

Host Pat Steinberg will bring you all you need to know before and after puck drop.

“We’ll still have the pre-game show, but it will be longer,” Kirch offered. “We’ll still have the post-game show. It will be longer.

“And yes, it’s been a while, but it’s time to let the listeners loose on the overtime call-in show. Everybody with their opinion after they’ve been enjoying the game, make sure you call in or text in and let us know what you think.”

Action in the exhibition game between the Flames and Oilers goes at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Flames Stanley Cup Qualifier versus the Winnipeg Jets begins Aug. 1.
