BANFF (660 NEWS) – If you’re heading west for a day in Banff, make sure you pack your mask.
The town has passed a mandatory mask bylaw for all indoor public spaces as well as outdoors in the mountain community’s downtown pedestrian zone.
That zone was created several months ago when Main Street was closed to vehicles to give pedestrians more space to social distance.
Banff Town Council passed a bylaw making wearing masks mandatory in enclosed public spaces like shops, cafés and facilities, and outside in the Downtown Pedestrian Zone, as of Friday July 31. Details will be linked from https://t.co/vNrncoIhTt tomorrow #Banff pic.twitter.com/R6BwUKGUmS

Mayor of Banff Karen Sorensen said there was overwhelming support from the community to introduce the new bylaw.
“When it is a decision, that even I’m unsure of, and sometimes I’m actually sitting at the table unsure of which way to go, these are always my filters: will it benefit the community as a whole? The answer is clearly yes in this instance.”
Sorenson added she’s heard from hundreds of residents on social media over the last couple weeks calling for this bylaw.
In a release, the town said the bylaw, and its effectiveness, will be reviewed at every council meeting and adjustments will be made as needed.
The mask bylaw goes into effect on Friday with the fine for not complying set at $150 dollars.
