Alberta search and rescue crews out more as people flock to the mountains

KANANASKIS (660 NEWS) – With vacation spots limited during the pandemic, many people are taking to the mountains to spend their time.

This is keeping search and rescue crews on their feet.

Just last weekend hiking and walking trails at Mount Yamnuska were closed following several incidents including one fatality.

The president of the search and rescue association of Alberta, Monica Ahlstrom said they’ve been kept busy with water rescues too.

“We are seeing a lot of increase around the eastern slopes – of course, because of where the mountains are. We are seeing defiantly an increase out there. We are seeing a large increase out in the area where I live – I live in Nordic.”

Ahlstrom added, two weeks ago, Parkland search and rescue were out everyday except one, which she says is unusual for a volunteer search and rescue team.

If you are planning to take a trip up to the mountains, make sure to plan your trip accordingly, pack the essentials, and if you are new to the area, make sure to ask someone familiar with the spot you’ll be in.
