Family pleading for help locating remains of murder victim

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — It has been more than a month since Shane Smith was killed, and his family is pleading for help locating his remains.

Calgary police believe the 20-year-old Chestermere man was murdered on or about June 6, with his body dumped sometime over the course of the following days.

Investigators have arrested and charged 24-year-old Charles Abercrombie of Calgary in the death, and it is believed that he and Smith knew each other.

“To think he left this world at the hands of who he thought was his friend is unbearable,” said Smith’s mother, Shirley. “What’s worse, the accused has hidden our beautiful son from us.”

Police were able to identify several vehicles believed to be involved in the murder, and two of them have been located.

But while extensive searches in the greater Calgary area have turned up no clues, police know other people have the information they need.

“We know that those people have spoken to others,” said S/Sgt. Colin Chisholm.

“We anticipate other individuals will be brought to justice.”

Smith’s family said the situation has left them devastated and are hopeful this public plea will help generate some answers as to where he is.

“He didn’t deserve to have his life taken, and he doesn’t deserve to be out there alone,” said Cassandra Smith, the victim’s older sister.

“Please let my family do what we never imagined we’d have to do and lay Shane to rest properly.”

If you have any information, contact Calgary police or Crime Stoppers.

The family also wanted to share a video of Smith’s memorial service, held in June.
