AHS extending hours and adding staff following spike in COVID-19 tests

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Alberta Health Services says they are adding more staff and extending hours in the Calgary area to deal with a giant spike of people wanting to get tested for COVID-19.

In a statement to 660 NEWS, AHS says over the last three days, they have gotten more than six thousand COVID-19 requests.

AHS got about four thousand requests last week.

The spike is caused by people who are asymptomatic wanting to be screened.

Some people have had to wait in lines for hours or even wait days to get an appointment.

AHS says their target is to get people who are showing symptoms a test within 24 hours and those who are not showing symptoms an appointment within five to seven days.

Requests in Edmonton are about half of what Calgary’s are.
