120 new COVID-19 cases in Alberta, biggest jump since May

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) — Alberta reported 120 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, making this the biggest single-day total for cases since May 2.

“I absolutely am concerned about our recent numbers and the increase in new cases we have had,” Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Thursday.

“I’m particularly concerned about the number of cases where we don’t know the source.”

Hinshaw added health officials will investigate where these cases came from but said it could be connected to younger adults not following public health advice.

“We continue to see the highest single population demographic who are new infections are those who are in the 20 to 29 and 30 to 39 age group,” she said.

“I think this is a reflection of many people feeling that they are tired of the restrictions, they don’t want to be held back anymore from interacting socially with their friends, from doing the things that they enjoy.”

The numbers reflected in Thursday’s update are transmissions that happened one to two weeks ago.

The province’s active cases surged past 800, an increase of 103 from the previous day.

List of active cases by zone:

  • Calgary zone: 362
  • Edmonton zone: 217
  • Central zone: 75
  • South zone: 90
  • North zone: 55
  • Unknown: 8

There are currently 69 people in hospital, with eight in the ICU.

Health officials added two regions in Calgary to the province’s “watch” list. The province is monitoring the risk of Calgary-Centre and Calgary-Elbow, discussing with local governments and other community leaders about the possibility of needing additional health measures.

Other areas being monitored by the province are Mackenzie County, County of Stettler No. 6, Wheatland County, Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26 and Cardston County.

A “watch” is put in place when an area has risen above 50 active cases per 100,000 people.

As of Thursday, 8,142 Albertans have recovered from COVID-19.
