Kenney optimistic about Keystone XL despite U.S. court decision

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – There’s still some optimism the Keystone XL project is not dead in the water after a U.S. Supreme Court decision earlier this week.

The court upheld a decision by a federal judge that a key environmental permit needed for construction in Montana should be blocked.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney doesn’t blame the conservative-dominated Supreme Court, which also prevented the ruling from affecting other projects.

“It’s not a revelation that a consortium, a very highly organized effort by green-left pressure groups funded by major U.S. foundations is trying to kill pipelines. It’s not just Keystone XL, it’s the entire energy infrastructure of North America.”

The original ruling from the federal judge sought to delay more than 70 pipeline projects in the U.S., not just Keystone.

Kenney added the government has prepared legal counsel to represent its interests.

“Effectively, what the Supreme Court decision does is to narrow the application of the Montana decision to one project, Keystone XL, rather than applying it to every pipeline project in the United States. The case itself will continue to proceed to the ninth circuit court of appeal.”

The United Conservative government recently invested $1.5 billion in the project which started construction of the Alberta leg last week.
