Cold Lake officer beaten during attempted arrest

COLD LAKE (660 NEWS) – Mounties in Cold Lake say one of their officers suffered serious injuries as they tried to arrest a suspect for stealing a vehicle.

Around 5:30 Tuesday afternoon, the officer spotted a stolen vehicle in a Walmart parking lot in Cold Lake.

As they tried to arrest the 44-year-old man, the officer was punched in the head, had their baton taken away, and then hit with it several times.

After, he fled on foot and tried to steal another vehicle but failed.

Police say the man then carjacked another vehicle at knifepoint, leading to a pursuit where officers disabled the stolen vehicle and arrested him.

“I want to thank the community members who came forward to assist our RCMP member and to provide valuable witness evidence in relation to this terrible incident,” said Sergeant Ryan Howrish of the Cold Lake RCMP in a release.

“An incident like this highlights the unpredictable and dangerous situations we face on a daily basis.”

Charges are pending against the man, while the injured officer is at home recovering from serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
