Police shut down magic mushroom lab near Red Deer

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary police and RCMP have shut down an illegal drug website and magic mushroom lab south of Red Deer.

Cyber and Drug investigators said they found the lab near the village of Forestburg following a 6-month investigation into a website selling a controlled substance.

The lab was producing and selling psilocybin also known as magic mushrooms.

“As drug markets have moved to online platforms, so have our investigations. We have adapted our capabilities, pairing drug investigators with cyber investigators, to ensure we are able to take action when we identify local sources of online drug trafficking,” said S/Sgt. Jeremy Wittman.

Police first found the website selling the mushrooms in January of this year and later found out the drug shipments were coming from Forestburg.

Investigators searched a rural property on Tuesday where they found the lab and seized over $750,000 worth of drugs.

A 40-year-old man was later arrested and charged with drug trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

Police said more charges are likely.
