Adoption centre closing doors after three decades

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A Calgary adoption agency is shutting its doors after being in operation for 31 years.

Adoption By Choice Ltd. (ABC) said in a statement that after careful consideration of several factors they will close at the end of July.

Now it leaves some families scrambling after the unexpected announcement the agency will be closing.

ABC says the need for services to birth parents who are making an adoption plan has decreased over the years and currently there are four licensed agencies in Alberta.

The Board of Directors is working with its staff to complete a system to help navigate clients and stakeholders through the process.

Current clients have been contacted by the company and appointments are being set up to see what steps can be taken.

Last year, there were 44 licensed and 166 private adoptions in Alberta.
