Design team selected for new Calgary Event Centre

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It’s another milestone for Calgary’s new arena and event centre as the project team has been announced.

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) named the companies that will help with the design and construction of the multi-million dollar project.

DIALOG, a local design firm, and HOK, a global design, architecture and planning firm, will partner together to create the event centre and future home of the Calgary Flames.

The firms have plenty of experience locally and internationally with DIALOG having led the designs for the Central Library and the new Calgary Cancer Centre.

HOK played a role in the development of the Little Caesars Arena, home to the Detroit Red Wings and Mercedes-Benz stadium home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

To help manage the construction of the event centre, the CMLC selected local construction firm CANA Construction partnered with Mortenson Construction.

“The Event Centre will be a year-round entertainment facility that will serve as an extraordinary civic amenity for Calgarians and visitors to enjoy for generations to come,” said Kate Thompson, President and CEO, CMLC in a news release.

“We were looking for a team to work alongside us for the next five years, we’re confident in our selection of DIALOG and HOK and CANA and Mortenson based on their collective experience, capabilities and understanding to deliver a venue that demonstrates Calgary’s pride and spirit.”

The process in selecting the design and construction firms began in January of this year with a committee comprised of members of the CMLC, The City of Calgary and Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) to review the interested firms.

“As we move forward with the development of this facility, we are confident this project team brings the experience, leadership and ambition to realize the full potential of what the Event Centre provides Calgary,” said John Bean, President and CEO, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation.

“With their experience of large-scale sport and entertainment facilities, we know that Calgary’s new Event Centre will be a source of civic pride for many years to come.”

Construction of the $550 million project is set to begin in August 2021, with completion slated for May 2024.
