CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Calgary Zoo is celebrating a rare event: the hatching of the first Gentoo penguin chick in three years.

Mom and dad, Georgia and Cooper, are standing guard over the fuzzy new arrival which is the second generation born at the zoo.

Georgia also hatched there in July 2014 while Cooper was born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo in 2008.

“The entire Gentoo colony seems excited about this special arrival, keeping a close eye on the newest member,” said Director of Animal Care Jamie Dorgan.

“The hatchling appears to be doing well and we’re leaving it to Mom and Dad to do what they know is best.”

The last time a Gentoo chick hatched at the zoo was in 2017 with the arrival of baby Onyx.
