City council passes anti-racism notice of motion

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary city council plans to work on eliminating systemic racism in the community following a motion passed unanimously on Monday.

The recommendations in the motion include establishing an anti-racism committee, a re-evaluation of city policies and procedures with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion, and the consideration of systemic racism and discrimination in the work of the community-based public safety task force.

Public consultations will be held at council’s community and protective services committee.

The proposal follows continued protests in both Canada and the United States in support of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement after George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis in May.
