Calgary’s State of Emergency lifted as of midnight

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – After three long months, the city of Calgary has ended its state of local emergency as of midnight Friday.
Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) Chief Tom Sampson says the time is right to call an end to the emergency.
“The number of COVID cases in Calgary has remained relatively stable,” says Sampson.
“We’re keeping a watchful eye on that,” he added.
Additionally, with the Phase-2 Economic Relaunch set for Friday, the city will soon begin opening up some of its indoor recreational facilities. However, Sampson says not everything will be given the green light.
“We do hope to have four to five aquatic and fitness facilities open, two arenas with four ice pads open and available, and (…) a couple of drive pads.”
He notes some of the city’s facilities have been undergoing maintenance and upgrades during the shutdown. As well, some 1,200 staff members were laid off and will have to be recalled.
The list of facilities slated for reopening will be posted on the city’s website.
Despite the new relaunch stage, Mayor Naheed Nenshi is reminding Calgarians this doesn’t change much and that the virus is still out there.
