Police officer who knelt on George Floyd arrested and charged

MINNEAPOLIS – Authorities in Minnesota say the police officer who knelt on George Floyd while in custody has been arrested and charged.

Officer Derek Chauvin was taken into custody by state authorities according to Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington.

Chauvin now faces charges of third-degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s death.

The arrest comes after three days of protests, which escalated in violence as demonstrators torched a police precinct that had been abandoned by officers.

Officials say more charges are possible.
