Second-degree murder charges pending in fatal northeast hit and run

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Second-degree murder and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death charges are pending against the driver in connection to a deadly hit and run earlier this month that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy.

On Wednesday, May 13, around 2:30 a.m., a 2010 Dodge Journey, traveling at a high rate of speed on southbound 52 Street, close to the interchange with 16 Avenue N.E., was struck from behind by a 2008 Buick Allure.

This caused the Dodge to cross over the median, ejecting 15-year-old Ibaad Yar where he was pronounced dead.

The Buick remained on scene for a short time before fleeing and was later located unoccupied in the Saddleridge area.

Following a lengthy investigation, two individuals were arrested by police.

“The driver can not be named at this time. I can confirm he will be charged with second-degree murder and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death,” Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm said during a Thursday press conference.

The individual is over the age of 18 and both were known to police.

Yar’s family was also at the conference with an emotional message describing Ibaad as a “goofy” kid who loved to “make people smile.” They pleaded for those with information to come forward.

“All of my family is in deep shock, no one can get any sleep,” Ibaad’s sister said.

“Let’s come together and seek justice for everyone so no one suffers the same fate as mine. This could be anyone else’s son, brother or friend.”

“He was a beloved son, a loyal brother, a faithful friend…he will be missed by everyone. Now that Ibaad is gone, he took all our joys with him and our home and hearts are empty without him,” Ibaads father said.

Police are looking to speak with individuals who were in a Chevrolet Tahoe observed at a residence in the Saddleridge area prior to and after the offense.

Anyone with information is asked to call 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers.
