Canada Post sets single-day delivery record

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Canada Post set a one-day record for parcel deliveries last week as more Canadians are shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It delivered 2.1 million packages last Tuesday, about three times the volume it normally does.
Canada Post isn’t just coping with the increased volume, but also heavier and bulkier packages since people are ordering large household items, such as barbecues and patio furniture.
The postal service said it has hired more temporary workers and has been processing and delivering packages on the weekends to try to keep up.
Canada Post is now telling people to expect delays for the foreseeable future since all items are moving through warehouses, which are not designed to keep workers two metres apart at all times.
On Monday, Canada Post announced it recorded a loss, before tax, of $66 million in the first quarter of 2020, as continued growth in parcels revenue and volumes was not enough to offset increased costs.
Ongoing declines in transaction mail and direct marketing also contributed to the loss, says a release.
